Minister Michel Létourneau Is Satisfied with the Results of his Participation in a Major Conference Held in Stockholm

Québec, August 12, 2002 - Upon his return from Sweden, Michel Létourneau, Minister for Native Affairs and the Development of Northern Québec, stated that he was pleased with the spin-offs for Québec of the 7th Conference of the Nordic Association for Canadian Studies (NACS), held in Stockholm from August 8 to 11, 2002.

Minister Létourneau had been invited, as keynote speaker, to talk about the two historic agreements reached earlier this year between the Government of Québec and the Cree nation and the Inuit Nation, as well as about northern questions. Ted Moses, Grand Chief of the Grand Council of the Crees, also gave a speech at this prestigious conference.

"The participants demonstrated a keen interest in Québec's approach to northern development and in particular to relations with the aboriginal nations, which contributed to the signing of La Paix des braves (Peace of the braves) and Sannarutik. These agreements are cornerstones and are part of an extremely promising perspective for the development of Northern Québec and Québec as a whole," indicated Minister Létourneau.

Moreover, this visit gave the Minister the opportunity to discuss various matters with members of the Swedish government, representative associations, and experts in northern and aboriginal questions.

"It is relevant for Québec to be present at such events, to increase and intensify its exchange network in order to enrich our vision of a strategy for Northern Québec. Northern lands depend on an age-old experience in the management of their northern affairs; Québec can draw inspiration from this experience," concluded Minister Létourneau.

Having as its title "Old Environments - New Environments", this 7th conference organized by NACS had three discussion themes including that of the northern dimension. As a result, the event provided a unique opportunity for Québec to have stimulating exchanges with researchers from around the world who are interested in northern questions.
