Minister Geoffrey Kelley pays a visit to the Algonquin Community of Kitigan Zibi

Québec, March 30, 2006 – On March 27th of this year, Mr. Geoffrey Kelley, Minister for Native Affairs, visited the Algonquin Community of Kitigan Zibi and held discussions with Chief Jean-Guy Whiteduck, who will be retiring soon. They talked about matters of concern to the community. Among other things, they discussed the process for consulting the First Nations, the commemorative park (le parc de la Réconciliation) project, and economic and community development.

During this first stay in Kitigan Zibi, the Minister met with the members of the Band Council and took advantage of the opportunity to visit the community in the company of Chief Whiteduck, elected for the first time in 1976. After more than a quarter of a century of participating in the development of his community, Chief Whiteduck will be retiring from political life in June of this year. “Under his leadership, the Community of Kitigan Zibi has shown that by taking active part in its development and by gearing its action to openness and collaboration, it is possible to impact the dynamics of future generations,” pointed out Minister Kelley.

This first meeting was in keeping with the desire and the commitment of the Government of Québec to support the development of aboriginal communities. “We will continue to support the exceptional work undertaken by Mr. Jean-Guy Whiteduck and his colleagues to improve the living conditions of their fellow citizens. Through their efforts and their work, the Algonquins of Kitigan Zibi have proven that a well managed aboriginal community can take up major challenges, while promoting its economic and social development and the creation of wealth in the region,” concluded Minister Kelley.
