Akwesasne Police Agreement

Akwesasne, February 9, 2007. — Minister for Native Affairs Geoffrey Kelley, on behalf of Minister of Public Security Jacques P. Dupuis, is pleased to announce the signing of the quadripartite agreement on police services by the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne and the federal, Ontario, and Quebec governments.

''This agreement ensures effective, professional police services adapted to the specific and unique characteristics of Akwesasne,'' said Kelley. ''Given the complexity of the territory’s geography, the agreement reflects and recognizes the need for close operational cooperation among all the various actors involved.''

The agreement signed runs until 2010, with the possibility of an extension until March 2011 to ensure continuity of police services in the community pending a renewed or new agreement. Quebec is contributing $4.5 million of the $18.8 million total of this current agreement.

''This agreement ensures a prolonged period of cooperation between the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne and its government partners,'' said Kelley. ''As well as respecting the particularities of Akwesasne, the agreement provides for maintaining the peace, social order, and public security.''
