Plane crash in Nunavut

Minister Geoffrey Kelley offers his condolences

Kuujjuarapik, August 22, 2011 – The Minister responsible for Native Affairs, Geoffrey Kelley, offers his most sincere condolences to the family and friends of the victims and to all the members of the Inuit Nation further to the crash of a First Air plane last Saturday. 

The chartered Boeing 737-200 left the airport in Yellowknife in the Northwest Territories with 15 people aboard headed for Resolute Bay, Nunavut. The plane crashed a few kilometres west of its destination. The toll was twelve casualties and three seriously wounded.  

"I was very saddened to hear about this tragedy. My heart goes out to everyone affected by this horrible accident," said Minister Kelley, currently in Nunavik for meetings with various leaders, including some members of the Makivik Corporation, owner of First Air.
